Abstract
MOSQUERA, Mario et al. Reflections on the extension of research education in health communication in the programs of Dengue fever prevention and control. The case of Barranquilla (Colombia). Investig. desarro. [online]. 2010, vol.18, n.1, pp.186-217. ISSN 0121-3261.
This paper presents the results of the formative research process of a health communication strategy aimed at understanding psychosocial and cultural dimensions associated with efforts to prevent and control transmission of dengue fever in low income areas of Barranquilla and Puerto Colombia, Departamento del Atlántico, Colombia. Results show that there are considerable gaps between levels of awareness and knowledge about the disease and the community's practices to prevent transmission of dengue, despite ongoing promotional efforts to educate the community by the local health district. The formative research shows the importance of selecting and integrating theories focusing on the relevant psychosocial and cultural aspects related to the disease, and the relevance of the integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches.
