Abstract

SANAHUJA, José Antonio. The European Union and Latin American Regionalism: a balance. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2013, vol.21, n.1, pp.156-184. ISSN 2011-7574.

Abstract Support for integration and regionalism is one of the hallmarks of the EU-LAC political dialogue and cooperation. This article examines the rationale, objectives and instruments of EU support to regionalism and Latin American integration, emphasizing in the incentives generated by Association Agreements, and the role played by regional and subregional EU aid programs. Although they have been effective instruments, lack of internal cohesion of regional groups in Latin America and policy coherence problems in the EU have limited their impact and effectiveness. From the lessons learned from that experience, we propose an enhanced support strategy for the new programming cycle of EU cooperation for the period 2014-2020.

Keywords : European Union; Latin America; regionalism; regional integration; development aid.
