Resumen
RAMOS TRUCHERO, Guadalupe. Food Access: the discussion on food deserts. Investig. desarro. [online]. 2015, vol.23, n.2, pp.391-415. ISSN 0121-3261. https://doi.org/10.14482/indes.23.2.6970.
The influence of diet on the health of citizens has led to consider availability of grocery stores as a determinant of food consumption patterns. Thus, "food deserts" appear in those areas unsupplied by grocery stores. The aim of this work is to do a theoretical and methodological approach to the food desert concept through a literature review. First of all, it defines what are these ones and what are the main contributions discussed. Next, we analyse critical answers about it use as an indicator to measure access to food, as well as proposals to redefine the concept. Finally, this article concludes by the exploration of the explanatory potential of this concept to rural areas where their application and analysis might be more justified.
