This paper presents the preliminary results of the first phase of a research project entitled "A state of art of the characteristics of the field of knowledge on Biology teaching". In this work, the authors systematized the contents of 161 publications on Biology teaching, written during the years 2007 and 2008, in 17 specialized journals, in which the teachers wondered if there was a field of knowledge and academic community to deal with this issue. The methodology that guided this research corresponds to a hermeneutic interpretative qualitative approach; the strategy used was that of documentary analysis, and the modality a state of the art. To address the research problem, the researchers took into account the criteria that have been established for the characterization of didactics of science. Although from the findings we cannot say that Biology teaching corresponds to a field of knowledge, we identify trends in favor of this thesis, aspect that demands an extension for the period of time devoted to the analysis of these publications.
