Abstract

GIRALDO TORO, María Teresa; CANADA CANADA, Florentina; DAVILA ACEDO, María A  and  MELO NINO, Lina V. Secondary school students' alternative conceptions about physical and chemical properties of water. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Tecnol. [online]. 2015, n.37, pp.51-70. ISSN 0121-3814.

This study aims to identify conceptions about physical and chemical properties of water in students from the four years of mandatory secondary school. It is important to know students' previous conceptions in order to identify any possible misconception and establish teaching strategies aimed at facilitating meaningful learning, so that students build scientifically accurate knowledge. A multiple-choice questionnaire made up of eight items, with a single correct answer, has been used for data collection. The sample consists of 82 students from the four courses of secondary school, in order to study the evolution of alternative conceptions along this educational cycle. The results show that alternative conceptions exist from the very first years, and most of them do not progress towards scientifically correct conceptions.

Keywords : Secondary school; alternative ideas; water.
