Abstract

ANDRADE-ESCOBAR, Luisa; FERNANDEZ-HERNANDEZ, Felipe Jorge  and  MENDEZ-REINA, Maritza. Exploration of the Notion of Distribution from Variability. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Tecnol. [online]. 2021, n.49, pp.73-90.  Epub Jan 27, 2022. ISSN 0121-3814.  https://doi.org/10.17227/ted.num49-9233.

This article presents the results of a teaching experiment aimed at verifying whether the work from variability contributes to the development of the notion of statistical distribution. For this, it is decided to run a teaching experiment in which a sequence of instruction is proposed so that the candidates for mathematics teachers achieve a broader idea of this concept. From the intuitive exploration of the data collections and the transit through several representation registers with the help of technology, it is found that the students notice and identify diverse aspects related to the variability that in turn are linked to the notion of distribution. In other words, by informally inquiring about the variability of data collections, students are actually uncovering characteristics of the distribution.

Keywords : distribution; variability; teaching experiment; spread; clustering; center; symmetry.
