Abstract
OSORIO D., Edison J.; MONTOYA P., Guillermo L. and ARANGO A., Gabriel J.. ALKALOIDAL NATURAL PRODUCTS WITH ANTIPROTOZOAL ACTIVITY. Vitae [online]. 2006, vol.13, n.1, pp.61-84. ISSN 0121-4004.
The morbidity and mortality associated with protozoan parasites diseases have motivated the investigation of new powerful and selective agents. The natural products as part of this investigation, play a crucial role in the development of a new generation of antiparasitic drugs. This review covers alkaloid compounds with mainly antiparasitic activity against Leishmania ssp, Tripanosoma cruzi and Plasmodium falciparum, isolated from natural sources. The compounds are organized according to the metabolites structure and subjects such as mechanisms of action (for which there is availability of works), recent developments in the field and new experimental strategies are discussed
Keywords : alkaloids; natural products; antiprotozoal activity.
