The assessment and alleviation of distrés, pain and suffering represent an important opportunity to improve the welfare of laboratory animals. The requirement to reduce suffering to a minimum is widely recognized and is central to many laws that regulate animal experimentation. This review gives a general introduction to these issues for users researches of animal models.
