Abstract

GARZON MEDINA, Carolina  and  BARRETO, Idaly. Feeding Practices and meanings of light foods in families of a bogota urban sector. Suma Psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.1, pp.89-99. ISSN 0121-4381.

Abstract This research aimed to identify dietary practices and the meanings of light foods in urban families in Bogota. This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of 110 persons belonging to 40 families. A survey was developed with open-ended questions which asked for demographic, socialization processes regarding food, food practices and light food consumption. The main results show that food is a space to share with family where mom is the backbone of the socialization of home food consumption and commensality. Light foods are defined by families symbolically as a nutrient, and they relate with diets and keeping a light weight, thereby with the pleasure of not becoming fat. Light foods also have a functional significance as medicines, due to their association with better digestion, increasing the body's natural defenses and better health status to guide and encourage healthy eating practices.

Keywords : family; feeding; light food consumption; socialization; commensality; consumption practices; consumer preferences; food preferences.
