This qualitative and hermeneutic study focus on understanding the meaning of hospitalization in Intensive Care Unit (UTI) for patients relatives. Sixteen of these relatives were interviewed in the UTI of a general hospital in one city of RS.From the analysis emerged the following thematic categories: Family in search of acceptance and solidarity; Bioethical aspects of hospitalization in the UTI; Apprehension and hope (despair) of the family; and, Separation and disorganization of the family. Thereby, the process of humanization of care in the hospital also must involve the family, and the professionals of the unit of intensive therapy must pay more attention to the patients relatives, as a new perspective of care.
