Abstract

This article offers a global vision of the state of the art of five graduation work pieces produced by pregrade students from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Nursing Faculty, between 2004 and 2007, developed in the postpartum services of four hospitals of Bogotá, within the project " Home monitoring of mother and newborn during the postpartum period" . It refers to the involvement of mothers in the postpartum period, their newborns, fathers and families as support group, who were monitored via telephone calls and home visits to identify the risk factors and alarm signs that could compromise health and life. Consistent with the findings in the nursing appraisals and monitoring activities, the students and teachers carried out health promotion and disease prevention actions, through educational sessions in institutional and home spaces, geared towards strengthening and initiating timely nursing care, promoting family participation, motivating early consultation and offering support for breastfeeding, healthy lifestyles, strengthening of the emotional bond mother-child-father, respecting cultural practices. Care interventions carried out by the students and teachers were strategies to participate in the reduction of morbidity, maternal and infant mortality rates due to avoidable causes. Moreover, the works evidenced that nursing care goes beyond hospital spaces and is really important in daily life scenarios as is the home.
