ROZO MOGOLLON, SANDRA MILENA e ABAUNZA DE GONZALEZ, MYRIAM. Transactional and transformational leadership. av.enferm. [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.62-72. ISSN 0121-4500.
Leadership is defined as the process of leading and influence on the working activities of a group and is recognized as a fundamental component that affect the general effectiveness of an organization. This study targets to establish the relation between the various types of transformational and transactional leadership and the socio-demographic and working variables associated with professors of nursing programs of the Colombian northeastern area, by means of a relational descriptive study involving a population of 94 nursing professors. A short version of the MLQ-5X based on the theory of Bass and Avolio on transformational and transactional leadership and their dimensions was applied. Results show a transformational leadership with a high-ranking trend and a transactional leadership with a low-ranking trend. As for the socio-demographic variable for the category of the civil status married/cohabitation was found to bear more relation to the transformational leadership, while the category of single/divorced professors is more associated with low transformational leadership, but this relation is very week considering how infrequent this civil status is among nursing professors. As a main conclusion, nursing professors exercise more transformational leadership than transactional, however, none of them is exclusive.
