The nursing professional practice characterizing the current historic context shows, as a distinctive feature, a real possibility for execution beyond the country borders, supported by the policies of the Ministry of Public Health regarding cooperation in health, and international and humanitarian principles governing the current Cuban society. Purposes: Facilitating the reflection over the existing relation among the communication skills of the nursing professionals when faced with situations or tasks inherent in their practice in English speaking countries, and their professional competence and the service quality offered. Final considerations: It would be desirable to include the communicative competence in English as a foreign language as a core component of nurses' professional competencies.
