Abstract

FRIAS, Cidália. Care of a dying person as a development experience. av.enferm. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.1, pp.13-22. ISSN 0121-4500.

This paper entails a reflection about learning how to take care of a dying person, focused on the nurse. The methodology that guided the study was qualitative and used the content-analysis technique. The work uses, as empiric material, the content of eight interviews made to nurses serving in Hospitalization Services with dying persons. The guiding lines are: understanding how the life history of the nurse has a bear on the process of death and how taking care of dying persons reveals the essence of the care moment itself. The subjects found were: life hanging in the balance; life path coming to an end; life and death together, and learning from the care of dying persons. Nurses consider that dying persons are well-related individuals and context influences the way they are with others. The study envisages a formation that privileges new forms of dealing with dying persons.

Keywords : nursing care; death; nurses; male.
