Abstract

Objective: Describe and analyze social-demographic and labor characteristics of nursing professionals and assistants who work in Huila. Methodology: Transversal descriptive study of a population of 308 nurses and 1025 nursing assistants distributed in the 37 municipalities of the department. Direct method and a self-managed questionnaire were used. The information was processed with Epi Info 6.04 D and Excel 2000. Results: Social and demographic characteristics: most of the population was women within class 1, 2 and 3 residing in Huila from over ten years. Professionals are concentrated in the capital of the department and in the most populated municipalities; 70 % graduated from the Universidad Surcolombiana, 27% has a master's degree and less than 20 % specialized in the disciplinary component. Nursing assistants ended up in schools of Neiva, work characteristics: about 60% works in healing assistance, less than 35 % work in first level Social State Companies (ESE). 33 % of professionals are part of the staff and two thirds have less than five years working in their current company, and 29.6 % of the nursing assistants are part of the staff. Over 60 % of professionals earn an average of $1,600,000 and only 2.6 % earn more than $3,090,000; el 73.4 % of assistants earn from one to two minimum wages.
