Abstract

VARGAS, Myriam Parra  and  BECERRA BULLA, Fabiola. Cognitive style in nursery students of the National University of Colombia 2009. av.enferm. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.2, pp.53-64. ISSN 0121-4500.

The selection of independent-dependent cognitive style in field by nursing students of the National University of Colombia, provides elements for understanding the learning process of students and in particular to the interest to use or implement pedagogical models useful to achieve the goals and comprehensive training objectives proposed in the nursing program set in the current academic reform. The awareness and identification of the learning conditions, study habits and cognitive styles of the students are used in nursing, medical, nutrition and therapies programs of the medical and nursing faculty of the National University of Colombia in order to optimize the teaching processes applied. Such awareness and identification are based on the interest research question: how are the cognitive styles of students of the National University of Colombia? To identify these aspects, it was crucial to use tools for data collection. Two instruments were applied: a survey and masked figures test to determine study habits and learning conditions, as well as the cognitive style. This article presents the results of the univariate analysis enacted for the first variables of learning conditions and study habits survey (corresponding to general data), in order to used them as illustrative sample in multivariate analysis. After performing six multiple correspondence analysis, one for each score group (high, medium or low) and one per semester (start of the career, half of the career and completion of studies), taking as illustrative variables those mentioned in the univariate aspect and adding the score, the multivariate type outcomes are introduced for the factorial aspect and cluster analysis. Subsequently the results of the application of masked figures test are presented, which identifies the cognitive style in the dimension of dependence-independence of field. In this test, the subject is presented with two figures: one simple and one complex. He was asked to find the first in the second. The research interest focuses on the question: What independent- dependent cognitive style of field and what study habits prevail in nursing students of the National University of Colombia?
