LOVERA MONTILLA, Luis Alexander. Quality of neonatal transport in the Valle del Cauca: challenge for the health department. av.enferm. [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.1, pp.80-91. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v32n1.46066.

Introduction: Neonatal transport is a procedure that involves the exposure to risk depending on the complexity of the pathology and on the quality of its prosecution. This study pretends to evaluate the transport safety of newborn babies who get into a neonatal unit as a quality attribute. Material and Methods: Descriptive transversal study in which a sampling for convenience was used: the representativeness was determined in a subjective way by evaluating the transport process, human resource, technical resources and inputs. The information was obtained from two sources: a) A survey administered to the assistance pediatricians in the neonatal unit to acknowledge their perception about the transport safety; b) An instrument applied to the professional and technical staff that joined 118 transports. Results: Out of the 118 transports, 46% were made by paramedics; 76% in Basic Assistance Transport Units (BAT); just 33% of the staff responsible of the assistance of the newborns have neonatal training; 82% of these transports neither kept vital signs record, nor other physiological variables required to diagnose the clinic condition of the neonate during the transfer; 76% did not verify the inputs and materials check list prior to each remission ignoring its importance. Accordingly, the risk on attention increases, impacting the quality of the procedure in a negative way. Discussion and Conclusions: Health institutions that offer neonatal transport should guarantee all the neonates who require the service to obtain it in conditions of quality and equity that minimize the risk factors and enable survival in the receptacle institutions.
