Abstract

Background: Intestinal parasites are a public health problem; it produces nutritional deficiencies and is associated with demographic and socioeconomic conditions. Objective: To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and anemia, and determining its association with demographic, socio-economic and sanitary conditions in indigenous people. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Data collected from a survey, hematological profile, stool and formalin-ether concentration. We estimated summary measures, parametric and nonparametric statistical test, proportions, and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of anemia was 23% and 73% intestinal parasitism. Significant association of anemia with intestinal parasitism was identified; excreta disposal, educational level and income were the factors risk for parasitism intestinal in the study group. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of intestinal parasites associated with anemia and it is attributed to sanitary conditions of Indian reservation.
