Abstract

URIBE VELASQUEZ, Sandra Patricia  and  LAGOUEYTE GOMEZ, María Isabel. "Being there", the meaning of spiritual care: the vision of nursing professionals. av.enferm. [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.2, pp.261-270. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v32n2.46230.

The importance of spiritual care within the exercise of nursing is undeniable. Even though there are different ways to provide this, it is a subject of interest and reflection. Objective: To understand the meaning of spiritual care for the professionals of nursing. Methodology: Qualitative investigation, made in Medellín (Colombia) between October 2011 and February 2013. Under the lineaments proposed by the fundamental theory, 14 professionals of nursing were interviewed, from both sexes, which were contacted through the snowball technique. The analysis of the data was made manually, following the process to understand what spiritual care means for nurses, how they define it, what strengths and barriers do they encounter when administering it and what actions do they take to this purpose. Results: The concept of spiritual care is vague, however, nurses take concrete action for care, specially the "being there", as a loving presence and "breaking the norm" as a possibility for opening new horizons for care. Conclusions: Despite there not being an agreement as to what spiritual care is, nurses take several actions towards the spiritual well-being of the patients. The investigation on the subject must be placed within our field to have more elements for formation and assistance.
