The objective is to analyze the situation of patients living with terminal illness in relation to the Colombian health system and the role of nurses. The Ley 100 de 1993 brought several changes, one is related to care in terminally ill, the other with the role of health professionals. This paper explores the concepts of palliative care and what happened in Colombia with this law and the role of the nurse. Conclusion: Nurses can be keys, with its pattern of emancipatory knowledge, care in adversity, advocacy and empowerment of patients' rights, including the policies making.
