Abstract Objective: To analyze scientific publications about use and effectiveness of fatty acids and nursing care activities for ulcers and chronic wounds prevention and treatment. Methodology: A literature review was performed on main health and social sciences data bases (MEDLINE-PUBMED, CINHAL, WEB OF SCIENCE, LILACS, SOCIOLOGICAL ABSTRACTS, CUIDEN, EMBASE, PSYCOINFO AND ISI WEB OF KNOWLEDGE). An analytic review on selected papers was made using a protocol to gather data. Results: 14 articles out of total papers of were reviewed reported results from clinical trial or qualitative research. Authors pointed out the advantages of using fatty acids for prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers and chronic wounds. Conclusions: In reviewed papers, issues concerning prevention, treatment and nursing care to patients with acute and chronic ulcers, were identified. As an intervention strategy, fatty acids effectiveness was reported, which suggests its usefulness in hospital protocols, under the consideration of a nursing care plan organized in terms of Nursing Process methodology.
