Abstract

CARRERA CASTRO, Carmen; ROMERO MORENO, Francisco Javier  and  GONZALEZ PEREZ, Andalucía. Review of utility and realiability of Confusion Assessment Method in primary and specialty care, 2013. av.enferm. [online]. 2015, vol.33, n.2, pp.261-270. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v33n2.40385.

Objective: The aim of this literary review was to show original researches published in the last 5 years, which evaluate the sensibility, specificity, and reliability of the scale Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) and take as gold standard to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in order to reach a global and current view of the validity and reliability this diagnostic tool. Methodology: We proceeded to a generic search in pubmed with the descriptors of the mesh Confusion, Sensitivity and Specificity, Diagnostic Techniques and Procedures and the free terms CAM or Confusion Assessment Method, generating 995 original articles, after a review and classification with structured tables, by independent form for every author. Results: 4 essays were found: 2 were of validation, translation and cultural adaptation to German and Thai, 1 was of validation in palliative patients and the 1 was a comparative cohort study of evaluation about performance of the CAM with the DSM-IV and the CIE-10 (International Statistical Classification of diseases, 10th review). Although found researches are scarce and more investigations are required, in proportional comparison with previous years more studies have been realized. The most used gold standard has been DSM-IV. Conclusion: CAM is a valid diagnostic tool with high sensibility and specificity when it is handled by previously trained personnel. It is accurate, reliable, secure, fast, and economic in the area of investigation, but more research is needed.
