Abstract

ALVAREZ YANEZ, Débora Milena. Nursing in Latin America: a look at the horizon. av.enferm. [online]. 2015, vol.33, n.2, pp.295-305. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v33n2.37032.

In the early nineteenth century, arises the need to provide empirical care to those unable to meet their basic needs by themselves, so that the favorable results of these interventions entailed the first schools of nursing education. Thus, various theoretical models and paradigms that allowed the development of nursing as a professional discipline appeared, promoting their position in the health sector and its appreciation against other disciplines. Trends in nursing are addressed to skills development, listed as a fundamental tool that allows the nurse to understand the existing social and health problem in the world today. This involves integrating the own body of knowledge of the discipline and interpersonal skills essential for decision making in different contexts; the nurse must assume new roles in different areas of performance, such as welfare, administration, teaching and research in the area of health, responding to the requirements of the patient and his/her environment. In Latin America, both the continued advancement of knowledge, rapid scientific and technological development, and globalization and institutional requirements, committed nursing professionals to take on new leadership and investigative skills based on solid evidence. This is accompanied by a critical attitude grounded in technical and scientific skills, required to make decisions and solve the problems that arise from the proper task of nursing.
