Objective: To perform a bibliographic review about the growth and development of premature and/or underweight newborns. Methodology: Databases Lilacs, MedLine and SciELO were used. 64 works were found: 10 of them published in 2005, 10 in 2006, 12 in 2007, 16 in 2008, 8 in 2009 and 8 in 2010. These publications were in the following areas: medicine (59,4%), nutrition (7,8%), nursing (7,8%), public health (7,8%), psychology (6,2%), epidemiology (4,7%), physiology (3,1%), and phonoaudiology (3,1%). Results: The texts that were found allowed an organization of the knowledge made according to the following categories of analysis: Factors associated to the underweight of newborns/premature; Repercussions about the underweight of newborns/premature along the growth and development and prevention methods; and The premature underweight newborns survival. Conclusion: The premature underweight babies usually have a development deficit. For this reason, a follow-up focused in the growth and development become essential.
