PARADA RICO, Doris Amparo  y  OLIVARES PARADA, Ruth Betsabe. Social determinants and academic achievement of schoolchildren from municipality of Cúcuta. av.enferm. [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.1, pp.42-52. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v35n1.58898.

Objective: To identify the social determinants in academic achievement in a group of schoolchildren from the municipality of Cúcuta, Colombia. Methodology: Quantitative-descriptive study, carried out at an educational institution in the city of Cúcuta, Colombia, from July 2013 to July 2014. The instrument Social Determinants and Academic Achievement in Schoolchildren, 2013, was used. Conducted content and reliability tests; Is constituted by three dimensions as follows: a first one that includes Intermediate Determinants, a second one referring to Academic Performance and a third that identifies Structural Determinants. The instrument has a global Cronbach Alpha of α= 0.701. Results: Social determinants that interfere in the academic achievement of schoolchildren were identified. These include both the personal type, especially in relation to the nutritional status, since there is evidence of downward growth in students with repeated schooling, as well as some related to the family, political and social environment. Conclusions: It is necessary to promote joint interdisciplinary actions focused on the design, monitoring and evaluation of programs offered to children in different settings, focusing on populations with poor social determinants. In addition, it is evident the need to contribute from research to the creation of public policies aimed at this population for the improvement of circumstances that favor educational achievements and adequate health conditions.
