PACHECO DOS SANTOS, Érika Eberlline et al. Young people's experiences in antiretroviral therapy for HIV: a phenomenological study. av.enferm. [online]. 2019, vol.37, n.3, pp.323-332. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v37n3.78804.

Objective:

to understand young people's experiences regarding the use of antiretroviral therapy for HIV.

Methodology:

phenomenological research, based on Martin Heidegger's theoretical-philosophical-methodological reference. Between March and June 2015, interviews with ten young people (ages 16 to 23) were conducted at the reference service in southern Brazil.

Results:

the units of meaning were: 1. Fear of communicating the diagnosis and of dying, justified in family or social experiences; 2. Taking medications is complicated, but they have to be taken for being well and taking care of others, and for that they look for strategies; and contradictorily, 3. Taking medications is normal and makes life different. Hermeneutics reveals the way to be-with in the relationships they establish with the people they trust. They are afraid of the possibility of prejudice and death. Ambiguously, they expressed that taking the medication is complicated and also normal, which makes life different. In the conversation, all the information seemed to have been understood, when in fact it was not, then the young people repeat what they hear from the professionals and remain curious.

Conclusions:

care is needed to strengthen the strategies and the support network to maintain the treatment.
