Abstract

CHAPARRO-DIAZ, Lorena; CARRENO-MORENO, Sonia Patricia; CARRILLO-GONZALEZ, Gloria Mabel  and  GOMEZ-RAMIREZ, Olga Janneth. Effect of a social support intervention on caregivers of people with chronic disease. av.enferm. [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.1, pp.18-27.  Epub Mar 16, 2020. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v38n1.77404.

Objective:

To determine the effect of the "someone supports a caregiver" nursing intervention on the perceptions of social support and overload with the care of family caregivers of people with chronic illness.

Methodology:

A quasi-experimental quantitative study with an experimental group and a control group, which was measured before and after the intervention by applying Sherbourne and Stewart's perceived social support instruments and Zarit Burden Interview. There was a total of 137 participants who met the inclusion criteria of being a primary caregiver for more than six months and being linked to the "Caring for Caregivers®" program of the Faculty of Nursing of the National University of Colombia. The data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential nonparametric statistics in which the Mann-Whitney test was applied for intergroup analysis.

Results:

There is no significant difference between groups in pre and post-test measurements in any of the variables, and there is a minimal change between the means of the burden variable between the pre and post-test of the experimental group.

Conclusion:

It is noted that the minimum effect of the proposed intervention is presented by the multidimensionality of social support, in addition to the use of different types of ICTs other than those proposed in this study.
