Abstract

DA COSTA BELARMINO, Adriano et al. Nursing perspectives on the maternal sepsis protocol: Analysis from the complexity theory. av.enferm. [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.3, pp.286-295.  Epub Jan 05, 2021. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v38n3.84775.

Objective:

To study the perspectives of nursing staff on the implementation of maternal sepsis protocol from complexity theory.

Method:

Descriptive study with a qualitative approach based on Edgar Morin's Complex Thought. Individual interviews were conducted, between July and August 2017, with 13 nursing professionals working in the obstetric area at a hospital in northeast Brazil.

Results:

Difficulties in adequate identification of maternal sepsis, delayed antibiotic initiation, lack of communication between professionals, and a weak alignment of conducts were observed, issues that impair the line of care for obstetric patients with sepsis.

Conclusions:

There is a positive perspective regarding the use of the protocol. However, some weaknesses are evident, establishing the need for new reflections on the complexity of the implemented care, professional roles, and communication within the health team.
