DA SILVA EVARISTO, Lidiane et al. Complications during hemodialysis sessions. av.enferm. [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.3, pp.316-324.  Epub 05-Jan-2021. ISSN 0121-4500.  https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v38n3.84229.

Objective:

To examine complications during hemodialysis sessions in a public hospital.

Materials and methods

Descriptive, quantitative and retrospective research based on the information in 63 medical records of patients admitted to the hemodialysis unit of a public hospital in Santarém City (Pará, Brazil), from August 2008 to December 2017, who experienced complications during their first year of treatment. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square, p < 0.05) with support from the BioEstat Program (version 5.3).

Results:

There was a prevalence of male patients (52.4 %) aged 60 or more (33.4 %). The average age of participants was 53.4 ± 14.1 years. Forty-five (45) types of complications were reported, the most frequent being hypotension (12 %), headache (9.5 %), malaise (8.4 %), hypertension (8.2 %), hypoglycemia (6.4 %), and cramps (5.9 %). The most common underlying diseases were diabetes mellitus and hypertension, while anemia predominated among comorbidities.

Conclusions:

The main complications found by this research were hypotension, headache and malaise. There was no statistical association between the number of complications of patients and their age, sex, underlying disease, or the presence of anemia
