Abstract
RODRIGUES, Diego Pereira et al. Understanding the values of humanizing labor and birth. av.enferm. [online]. 2024, vol.42, n.1, 109229. Epub Feb 11, 2024. ISSN 0121-4500. https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v42n1.109229.
Objective
To understand the values of humanization held by health professionals in labor and birth care.
Materials and method
Phenomenological study using Max Scheler's Theory of Values. Forty-eight health professionals at four maternity hospitals in the Metropolitan Region II of the state of Rio de Janeiro were interviewed. After collecting the data, an analysis was carried out based on Paul Ricoeur's Theory of Interpretation.
Results
There were shortcomings and values expressed, indicating the need to intervene in the logic of obstetric care through the implementation of practices based on scientific evidence, that increase humanization and establish more beneficial obstetric care, for the "woman-child" binomial.
Conclusions
Understanding the values of humanization in labor and birth care is essential to guaranteeing a change in the way care is provided and a restructuring of the care model.
