This study seeks to contribute to the understanding of what happened to the Colombian party system during the last three decades. It not only refers to the opening or reconfiguration of the party system, understood in terms of incorporation of new forces to the electoral political space or of the transit to a multiparty system, but it deals also with the question of political stability. It examines the evolution of the party system in the local and regional environments, addressing the following variables: the number of parties, electoral volatility, and the presence of third forces in the period between 1972 and 2000.
