ECHANDIA CASTILLA, Camilo e BECHARA GOMEZ, Eduardo. CONDUCT OF THE GUERRILLA DURING THE VéLEZ GOVERNMENT URIBE: OF THE TERRITORIAL CONTROL To THE STRATEGIC CONTROL LOGICS LOGICS. anal.polit. [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.57, pp.31-54. ISSN 0121-4705.
Throughout the 1980's armed groups were able to expand their influence to areas of great strategic value, but now they are at a high risk to become military vulnerable. The guerrilla is fighting against stronger and better prepared Military Forces as a result of the modernization initiated during the last presidency and deeper continued by the present administration. Government actions have placed the guerrilla in a military inferiority and have weakened it from an economic perspective. The insurgency has lost the initiative of armed confrontations while the Colombia's Armed Forces have recovered it. The guerrilla has been able to adapt to new realities within the Colombian struggle scenario. In order to compensate their military inferiority and diminish their vulnerability, the insurgency has modified their tactics and strategies. In that way, it evades the direct confrontation with the Military Forces and privileges own actions of guerrilla warfare aiming to exhaust the government progressively. Within this context, guerrillas decided to postpone their objective of achieving territorial control and instead they are now looking to control strategic positions that will ensure their survival and the continuity of war.
