This article is a synthesis of some reflections and proposals around participative democracy, grounded on a revision of French and Latin-American literature. It aims at analyzing the paradox by witch participative democracy still confronts obstacles for its implementation, although the context may be apparently propitious for its legitimation. It also questions some theoretic and empirical postulates about the relationship between representation, participation and the democratic enforcement. This revision enables us to do a critical balance falling into neither an excessive skepticism nor an ingenuous idealization of participative democracy, and thus propose some paths for an investigation agenda.
