Abstract

SALGADO, Juan Sebastián. COLD WAR COMES TO LATIN AMERICA: THE IX PAN- AMERICAN CONFERENCE AND THE APRIL 9. anal.polit. [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.79, pp.19-34. ISSN 0121-4705.

The importance of April 9th 1948, arguably the most important event in Colombia's XX century, has overshadowed the IX Pan-American Conference held in Bogotá that same month. This essay suggests that the Conference and its results fostered the introduction of the Cold War in the hemisphere and positioned the continent's politics and diplomacy towards the bipolar confrontation. The urban violence resulting from Gaitan's assassination -and the murderous act itself- served as an excuse to denounce a nonexistent Soviet conspiracy supposedly executed by Colombian Communists, polarizing national and continental politics.

Keywords : Cold War; IX Pan-American Conference; April 9th 1948; anticommunism.
