ALVAREZ, Silvia Monroy. Pacification and violence. Axes for a comparison between Colombia and Brazil. anal.polit. [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.82, pp.113-129. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v27n82.49410.

Based on the notion of "pacification" as a means to compare the dynamics in Colombia and Brazil, I observe some mechanisms of the State as a producer of dangers that encourage informality and illegality. I compare, specifically, the "pacification of Urabá" in Colombia, and the "pacification" by the Pacifying Police Units (UPPs) in Rio de Janeiro. Some of the mechanisms referred in this article, which envisions a research agenda for future developments, are: the exceptionalness as a mechanism that allows the activation of the value of security and its encompassed, insecurity; the territory/population non-differentiation related to certain notions of territory and sovereignty, and the privatization of the providing aspect of the State through practices of militarization.

Palavras-chave : "pacification"; violence; Urabá; Rio de Janeiro; Pacifying Police Units (UPPs).
