This article analyzes presidential reelection in the Andean countries. The debate is approached from the perspective of Jon Elster, who interprets constitutionalism as a mechanism of prior commitments in which institutional ties or constraints are established in order to prevent a ruler from exceeding his or her authority in the future due to an excess of power "mermaid songs". In this sense, trends that allowed or restricted presidential reelection in Andean countries were established. According to these trends, the influence of the incumbent ruler was instrumental in establishing different outcomes: self-tying, institutional untying, or tying oneself to "others."
