Abstract

CASTELLANOS-OBREGON, Juan Manuel; OSORIO-GARCIA, David  and  TAPASCO-ALZATE, Omar. STRATEGIES FOR MOBILIZATION, RECRUITMENT, AND COMPOSITION OF ELECTORAL LISTS IN LOCAL ELECTIONS. MANIZALES CITY COUNCIL, 2011. anal.polit. [online]. 2016, vol.29, n.87, pp.3-40. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v29n87.60715.

Objectives: compare the strategies for recruitment and selection of candidates in a number of elections for the municipal council as they relate to structure and volume of mobilized capital and the results obtained. Finally, the relationship between position within the dominant structure in the field, mobilization strength of different types of capital, and the electoral results obtained is analyzed. Methodology: a comparative analysis is conducted of increased capital investments in conjunction with the new lists of candidates from parties present in the city council election. Archives of electoral information from the National Register, media information from the daily newspaper La Patria, and surveys given to members of the candidate list were combined and analyzed. The basic analysis is a combination of historical series processes, descriptive analysis, multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), and/or CHAID algorithms. Results: The polarized organization of the political sphere, as well as differentiation between parties who have been in power and emerging parties with few results in previous elections and in local power were demonstrated. This structure is related to ideological space in conjunction with the mobilization strategies of different types of incorporated capital (age, gender, education, and origin), different types of mobilized political capital (fidelity, militancy, experience with popular election responsibilities, bureaucratic experience, and political trajectory), and money declared as campaign spending. Finally, the relationship between investment volume and electoral results was reviewed, demonstrating how an inertia in the field is reproduced with respect to the capacity to mobilize resources.
