This article analyzes the process for local and regional candidate selection during the 2015 local and regional elections in the Colombian Department of Valle del Cauca (Valle) and the City of Santiago de Cali (Cali). More precisely, it relates to the impact that institutional variables had on this process, especially those involving electoral systems in fragmented management scenarios involving political parties lacking adequately defined identities. Based on the foregoing, it evaluates how institutional choices such as electoral district size and the nature of proportional representation lists impact political party candidate selection for the offices of governor and departmental assembly (Valle), and, mayor and municipal council (Cali, the Departmental capital).
