BURGOS, Germán. THE MONOPOLY OVER VIOLENCE AS A JURIDICAL CONSTRUCT. CERTAIN GLOBAL CHALLENGES. anal.polit. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.89, pp.111-126. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v30n89.66220.

This article seeks to problematize the concept of the monopoly of violence, understood as the idea that the State is the only actor authorized to legitimately and justifiably exercise force. It first contextualizes the discussion on whether the State uses violence or force to then argue that the meaning of this monopoly is above all the unsatisfied intention of most States to possess certain weapons, regulate access to others, and effectively punish any abuse of physical or armed force in society. Finally, it suggests that this intention is thrown into question by the growth of multi-national mercenary companies and the current technological possibility of printing weapons.

Palavras-chave : modern State; monopoly of violence; legitimacy; coercion; compulsion; force; globalization.
