RUBIANO, Elkin. VICTIMS, MEMORY AND MOURNING: CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE POST-ACCORD SCENARIO. anal.polit. [online]. 2017, vol.30, n.90, pp.103-120. ISSN 0121-4705. https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v30n90.68304.
Historically in Colombia the relationship between art and violence has been very close but changes can be observed. During the past decade discourse concerning remembrance, victims and mourning (among others) have permeated artistic practices. In addition, the Victims’ Law, the National Museum of Remembrance and the Final Agreement to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace seek answers through art calling attention to symbolic reparation and the construction of historical memory. This paper undertakes a detailed analysis of an “act of mourning” created by artist Doris Salcedo in Bogota’s Plaza de Bolivar. The project articulated many of the problems affecting the relationship between art, remembrance, victims and mourning, allowing one to consider the role that different forms symbolizing violence will play in the Post- Accord setting.
