At the beginning of a post-conflict process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and with the concurrent implementation of mechanisms for transitional justice, including a truth commission, questions arise with respect to: the now fading bellicose past, responsibility for what occurred and, the social memory which has been constructed with respect to this conflictive reality. Obviously social memories independent of institutional ones exist. What has their Colombian trajectory been? Who participates? How do they relate inter se and with state institutions? This article traces the trajectory of Colombian memory development based on the author’s experiences both institutionally and as an analyst of the internal armed conflict.
