This article aims to determine the factors that explain the rise, resurgence and decline of international studies in Chile. Considering the constructivist and critical perspectives of international relations, together with the analysis of the transformations that affected the country in the period of dictatorship and subsequent return to democracy, it is proposed that the changes that occurred had an impact on the development of ideas and academic production, which was facilitated by the role played by intellectuals. In this sense, although an epistemic community was created, it did not generate its own ideas about the international that transcended in time; additionally, once democracy was recovered, most scholars of international relations moved from academia to political practice. The sum of such phenomena undermined this field of study, which, after several decades, still has an uncertain future.
