The present article aims to address the process of construction and subsequent evolution of geopolitical knowledge in South America, especially in conceptual terms, based on the fact that one of the main problems of the discipline lies in the ignorance of the limits and scope of what it implies. a geopolitical phenomenon. At this point, the influence in the region of military institutions on the construction of the discipline is highlighted, leaving aside other types of conceptions more linked to development or critical guidelines of geopolitics. It is concluded that despite the differences, South America continues to be a fertile ground for the construction of geopolitics, having as challenges to join theoretical and epistemic visions, with the aim of having a better understanding of the regional geopolitical reality.
