Abstract

CEBALLOS BEDOYA, María Adelaida  and  GARCIA VILLEGAS, Mauricio. LAWYERS IN BULK: LEGAL EDUCATION IN COLOMBIA FROM A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE. anal.polit. [online]. 2021, vol.34, n.101, pp.97-119.  Epub July 12, 2021. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v34n101.96562.

Despite the importance of legal education to enhance the rule of law, little research has been done on this subject in Colombia. This article seeks to help bridge this gap by analyzing Colombian legal education through a comparison with Germany, the United States, and Mexico. The German model of legal education is characterized by strong state regulation, the us model has strong controls by the profession, and the Mexican model presents deregulation and market dominance. Colombia tends to resemble the latter model. This article argues that current legal education in Colombia is not an inevitable fate, but the result of specific choices made decades ago. Although these choices have often been harmful, they are reversible if we learn from the valuable lessons offered by models from different regions.

Keywords : legal education; Colombia; Latin America; sociology of law; Germany.
