Why is it that the demobilization of an armed actor hegemonic in a territory does not increase homicidal violence rates, although it produces armed competition among different organizations that try to take over its domain? This article proposes the concept of selective armed competition to explain a situation in which the actors in dispute specify victimization profiles to avoid attracting media and institutional attention, while affecting their armed competitors. To do this, it compares three cities from the Caribbean coast of Colombia (Santa Marta, Cartagena, and Barranquilla) during the years following the demobilization of the auc’s Bloque Norte in 2006. The study found that, during these years, homicidal violence did not increase, but armed competition was maintained through selective assassinations, criminal outsourcing, and the barbarization of violence.
