This paper offers a critique of the discursive apparatus wielded by regionalist and separatist ideologues in the Spanish political context. It does not intend to expose the historical evolution of such movements but rather present an analysis of some of the notions that sustain these doctrinal bodies. Such discourses constantly played with the idea that Spain is an “artificial” reality, which would enclose a set of “natural peoples” or “genuine cultures.” The article will argue that such a scheme is inconsistent, showing that such discourses and movements are reactionary and ethnicist.
