Abstract

ATEHORTUA CRUZ, Adolfo León. THE IMPORTANCE OF ORDER AND VIOLENCE IN THE HISTORIOGRAPHY ABOUT VIOLENCE IN COLOMBIA. anal.polit. [online]. 2022, vol.35, n.105, pp.67-83.  Epub Apr 11, 2023. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v35n105.107746.

This article examines the importance of Daniel Pécaut’s book Order and Violence for the Colombian historiography of violence. In this sense, two aspects are considered. First, Pécaut’s book breaks with the functionalist-structuralist tradition that prevailed until the 1980s, proposing a new hypothesis linked to the formation of the nation-state, its historical fragility, and uncertainties about identity, which, in the case of Colombia and Latin America, have led to a permanent search for political order. Second, Pécaut’s extraordinary contribution of a new vision regarding Gaitán and Gaitanism is pointed out. This vision highlights the role of the imagery and the symbolic institution of social factors, the political sphere, the social sphere, and what is outside them, with a theoretical backdrop that has turned into a driving force of new historiographic interpretations.

Keywords : Order and violence; violence in Colombia; Gaitán; Gaitanism; historiography of violence..
