BAQUERO M., Jorge e ORIGUA, Brayan. PARAMILITARY GROUPS IN THE PROVINCE OF SUMAPAZ, COLOMBIA (2001-2004). anal.polit. [online]. 2022, vol.35, n.105, pp.210-241. Epub 23-Abr-2023. ISSN 0121-4705. https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v35n105.107756.
The socio-spatial dynamics of the armed conflict in a part of the Sumapaz region during the second half of the twentieth century were characterized by an intensive use of violence by the FARC-EP and the National Army. However, between 2001 and 2004, paramilitary groups developed a strong presence and incidence there. Thus, the present text aims to illustrate the role of the Tolima Bloc of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia and the Peasant Self-Defense Forces of Casanare in the province of Sumapaz through an analysis of the violent acts committed by paramilitary groups recorded in testimonies, local files, reports from social organizations, press files, secondary sources, and databases. Finally, this comparison of sources allowed establishing a reading on the motivations for the emergence of paramilitarism, the role of political elites in promoting this phenomenon, and some elements that helped understand the persistence of paramilitarism in the territory.
