Abstract

BARRETO-GALEANO, María Idaly et al. TYPES OF POLARIZATION IN THE 2022 COLOMBIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. anal.polit. [online]. 2024, vol.37, n.108, pp.55-73.  Epub Jan 13, 2024. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v37n108.117272.

The 2022 Colombian presidential elections occurred in several stages (coalition internal elections, first round, and second round). This study analyzed the interaction between ideological polarization, thematic polarization, and affective polarization during these three stages using a quantitative design that incorporates the analysis of language used in the candidates’ Twitter (now X) accounts. The results show the differentiated presence of types of polarization at the analyzed moments: while affective polarization predominates in coalition consultations and the second round, thematic polarization prevails in the first round. Notably, the interaction of ideological and affective polarization is prominent in decisive electoral moments such as the second round, with the salience of positive in-group emotions, compared to other traditionally explored dimensions, such as animosity towards the opponent.

Keywords : polarization; elections; candidates; ideology; emotions.
