This article presents the current debate on pure theory of the money, evaluating the validity of the results of two types of neoclassical models -overlapping generations and search-, which attempt to explain money departing from Walrasian general equilibrium theory. It also presents an alternative non-neoclassical proposal, based on Marx's conception of the unity between circulation and production and on an institutional vision of money
